I’m super excited about this book! We’ve been working with Oni on a few other books and they wanted to maybe do something game related with us. When I started working on Costume Quest 2, I thought about how we might figure something out for this game that could work with them… Zac was the only person I thought of for this project. There was no second choice. It was basically him or I’d probably drop the idea. Luckily, Zac was into it! And not just a new one page Magical Game Time comic. He was in for something big! And so were we! And somehow the logistics got worked out between 3 parties with no issues. And now we have an awesome fat-ass book on the way!
This year for Double Fine’s Amnesia Fortnight, I was stoked to draw Anna’s Dear Leader out of the hat! I spent two weeks writing my brains loose and waxing despotic. We’re proud of what we were able to accomplish in 2 weeks. You can check out the prototypes on Humble Bundle for another couple of weeks!
While finaling the excellent game Brütal Legend, I was approached by Kevin Toyama to do an art book for the game. He was clearly passionate about it, so with no hesitation, we got crackin’ on it. We crunched for weeks on that mofo, putting lots of blood sweat and tears into it along with the eloquent writer of metal, Daniel Bukszpan, and the amazing designer, Brian Singer. The finished book looked incredible!
And then!… it didn’t come out. The book was done, but some things didn’t go as planned on the money side, and the book got tabled temporarily. I pitched it around to some other publishers, and it seemed like it would take off, but nothing materialized. So much time went by that I thought it just wasn’t going to see the light of day. The more distance it got from the launch of the game, the less likely it seemed that it would happen. Toyama and I lamented over beers.
But then we decided to relaunch Brütal on the PC. And simultaneously, UDON swooped out of the sky like angels to pick the book up and give it the deluxe treatment! And now the book is coming out.
It is without hyperbole that I say this is the best art book I have ever seen. The art is incredible, the writing and artist commentary is unique and not watered down, and the production values of the book are insane.
If you are in San Francisco next week, you can come meet the artists and get the book for yourself! You can also preorder the book on the Double Fine website. Toyama and I will be there with our beers, but we we will no longer be lamenting. We will be some smiling emeffers.
HAPPY CORGI. One of the one-hour drawings I’ve been doing, available for purchasing by you right here. All the ones thus far are here. Subject suggestion for this one was (paraphrasing) “a happy corgi.”
