While finaling the excellent game Brütal Legend, I was approached by Kevin Toyama to do an art book for the game. He was clearly passionate about it, so with no hesitation, we got crackin’ on it. We crunched for weeks on that mofo, putting lots of blood sweat and tears into it along with the eloquent writer of metal, Daniel Bukszpan, and the amazing designer, Brian Singer. The finished book looked incredible!
And then!… it didn’t come out. The book was done, but some things didn’t go as planned on the money side, and the book got tabled temporarily. I pitched it around to some other publishers, and it seemed like it would take off, but nothing materialized. So much time went by that I thought it just wasn’t going to see the light of day. The more distance it got from the launch of the game, the less likely it seemed that it would happen. Toyama and I lamented over beers.
But then we decided to relaunch Brütal on the PC. And simultaneously, UDON swooped out of the sky like angels to pick the book up and give it the deluxe treatment! And now the book is coming out.
It is without hyperbole that I say this is the best art book I have ever seen. The art is incredible, the writing and artist commentary is unique and not watered down, and the production values of the book are insane.
